The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued guidance on the use of dry heat to help support the single-user reuse of certain particulate filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs), such as N95 respirators, by healthcare personnel when there is a limited supply of respirators during the COVID-19 public health emergency.
The immediately-in-effect guidance provides the FDA’s thinking and recommendations regarding the use of bioburden reduction systems that use dry heat to reduce the bioburden, or amount of microorganisms present, on certain respirators for reuse by a single user. Bioburden reduction systems are intended to achieve a certain level in microbial reduction on a device; these are not decontamination systems. Additionally, these systems should only be used in conjunction with existing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for FFR reuse.
“There exists sufficient evidence demonstrating that there is a reduction of microbial load on certain respirators when exposed to certain dry heat parameters. Bioburden reduction systems can play an important role in the ongoing efforts to help address shortages of FFRs,” said Dr. Binita Ashar, director of the Division of Surgical Devices in FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Today’s guidance is another example of how FDA is working to address critical shortages in personal protective equipment and help protect health care personnel during the COVID-19 public health emergency.”
Under this policy, the FDA does not intend to object to the use of certain dry heat systems for the purpose of reducing bioburden and supporting single-user reuse of otherwise disposable FFRs that are compatible with dry heat bioburden reduction systems without marketing authorization. Manufacturers should follow the system settings for bioburden reduction—such as temperature and time—and labeling recommended in this guidance, and also follow existing CDC reuse recommendations, such as storing the respirator in a breathable paper bag for a minimum of five days between each use and limiting the number of wears to no more than five per respirator.
The FDA has issued emergency use authorizations (EUAs) for certain decontamination systems for decontaminating compatible FFRs, and has issued guidance to provide recommendations for sponsors requesting EUAs for decontamination and bioburden reduction systems for surgical masks and respirators. However, today’s guidance is the first enforcement policy guidance specifically for bioburden reduction systems for FFRs. To date, no EUAs have been issued for bioburden reduction systems that use dry heat. While dry heat bioburden reduction systems do not provide FFR decontamination, which is a higher level of microbial reduction, these systems may still be sufficient to reduce bioburden on compatible FFRs and support single-user reuse of these respirators by supplementing existing CDC reuse recommendations.
This policy applies to bioburden reduction of FFRs that do not have exhalation valves, do not incorporate a duck-bill design, and do not contain antimicrobial/antiviral agents and that 1) have been FDA-cleared, or 2) have been FDA-authorized under the EUA for CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-approved FFRs, or 3) have been FDA-authorized under the EUA for imported, non-NIOSH-approved FFRs that are not manufactured in China. The FDA is considering revising the scope of authorization of the above mentioned FFR EUAs to include bioburden reduction under certain circumstances. At this time, FFRs that have had bioburden reduction with one of these systems are not authorized under an existing EUA.
Currently, there are no FDA-cleared or approved devices for decontamination or bioburden reduction of respirators.

Nov 29 (Reuters) – England captain Jos Buttler wants to explore the prospect of giving up the gloves and focusing on his batting under incoming white-ball coach Brendon McCullum
as the wicketkeeper-batter eyes Champions Trophy success
after two failed World Cup defences.
Buttler has kept wicket for the majority of his Twenty20 international career,
which began in 2011, but chose to play solely as a batter in England’s recent 3-1 T20I series victory over
the West Indies.
Phil Salt took over wicket-keeping duties in place of the 34-year-old, who was making a comeback
after a four-month injury layoff.
“It’s something we tried in the Caribbean, not keeping wicket and as captain being closer to the bowler, which I enjoyed,” Buttler told Reuters.
“I had more time and energy not being a wicket-keeper and around training as well. That’s something I found interesting.”
McCullum, who already coaches the test side,
will take charge of the white-ball teams when England tour India in January.
“I know McCullum is coming in as the coach (who) in his career moved from wicketkeeper to a fielder, so that’s something I can discuss with him,” Buttler
added.
Buttler, under whom England won the 2022 T20 World Cup but failed to defend the T20 and fifty overs
titles, said it’s his “ambition” to win next year’s
Champions Trophy but added that he was trying not to look too far
ahead.
“We play against India in the new year before that tournament, which will obviously be a huge challenge and good preparation…,” Buttler said.
“And to be honest, I’m just focused on Brendon coming in and getting close with him and working hard together to take the team where we want it to be.”

Buttler said he was excited for a new challenge with Gujarat Titans,
who bought him in this month’s Indian Premier League (IPL)
auction for 157.5 million Indian rupees ($1.86 million).
“There are guys who I already know relatively well in the coaching staff, like Vikram Solanki and Parthiv Patel,” he said.
“I’m just really looking forward to getting to know Shubman (Gill). He’s an absolute superstar of the game and makes batting look very easy… With my record against Rashid Khan, having him in the team is a big help.
“It’s a really exciting bowling lineup… with guys like (Kagiso)
Rabada, (Mohammed) Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. So lots of pace on show and obviously,
Rashid is the best T20 bowler, so getting to see him up
close as well.”
Buttler is currently one of the highest run-scorers in Abu Dhabi T10 where he is in red-hot form with second-placed Deccan Gladiators.
“I was looking forward to playing in the T10 this time.
I’ve never played in it before… it’s not a format that you’re
looking to be consistent in because you’re playing lots of high-risk shots.

Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there are many ways to serve them
(see tip). The veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but
you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince.
This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.
The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a medium heat,
then add half the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes
and when the liquid starts to bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft. In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and
the rest of the onions and garlic. Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it
first. Mix well and season with salt and pepper.
Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes)
to ensure they colour all over. If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside on a
plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium heat.
Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further
4-5 minutes to cook through. Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according
to the packet instructions until al dente. Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of
the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary, and then transfer it back
to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil and butter.
Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the meatballs and sauce.
Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.
